Is A Senior Center Right For You?

What do you think of when someone says the words “senior center”? Do you picture a bunch of old people (much older than you, of course) sitting around talking about the old days?

If so, it’s time to adjust your vision. Today’s senior centers, including the 8 that comprise westshoreseniors.org, are vibrant, lively, active places that offer a variety of programs and opportunities to appeal to almost everyone.

So what does one do at a senior center? It varies by center, but generally we all offer:

  • Health and Wellness Programs: A variety of exercise options, health screenings, nutrition classes, disease and health-specific programs, and cooking demonstrations, to name just a few options. Our goal is to provide the key elements that will help our participants stay healthy and independent as they age.
  • Lifelong Learning: Curiosity and the desire to learn do not decrease with age, and help keep our brains stimulated. Whether attending a Lunch and Learn session on a topic of interest or a multiple-week training program, senior centers offer a wide variety of programs to keep our participants informed and engaged.
  • Socialization and Recreation: How does lunch downtown sound? Or a trip to the Westside Market, or the art museum to see a special exhibit? How about a luncheon to celebrate Valentine’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day? Maybe you would prefer a trip to the Hard Rock Casino? Or maybe you’re not much of a joiner and would prefer a small puzzle or needlecraft group, or a card game. Socialization has a positive impact on a person’s physical and mental health, and there is no shortage of opportunity to socialize at your Westshore senior centers. By joining our forces to create Westshoreseniors.org, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for everyone to find something of interest. Each center differs in the number and types of programs they offer, but you may attend any of the 8 Westshore centers to meet your needs.

Although we may offer some similar programs, each center is different in personality and size. Again, find the one(s) that is right for you. Each center will also offer city-specific programs to appeal to their residents, and the social services offered at each center is for that center’s residents.

You are always welcome to visit any of our centers, talk to the staff and get a tour of the center and the program offerings. And don’t forget to keep coming back to westshoreseniors.org for the latest information on all of our centers!
